Vision Service Plan

Are you interested in learning more about Vision Service Plan (VSP) insurance? Maybe you already have VSP and are looking for an eye doctor in Charlotte or Asheville, NC.

If so, you’re in the right place. At Reflect Vision Care, our eye doctors proudly accept VSP, along with a variety of vision and medical insurances, to help you get the best possible eye care and maximize your benefits.

Below, we’ve outlined the most common questions our patients ask about VSP and how it works for eye exams, glasses, and contact lenses.

What Is Vision Service Plan (VSP)?

Vision Service Plan (VSP) is one of the largest and most trusted vision insurance providers in the United States. Founded over 65 years ago, VSP partners with both individuals and businesses to provide high-quality, affordable vision care.

VSP’s mission is simple: to help you see well, stay healthy, and live life to the fullest.

In addition to covering eye exams, glasses, and contact lenses, VSP also offers:

  • Discounts on LASIK and PRK through their laser vision correction network

  • Savings on lens enhancements such as anti-glare, blue light protection, and photochromic lenses

  • Access to the largest independent optometry network in the U.S.

How to Find a VSP Provider

VSP makes it easy to find a participating eye doctor. With over 36,000 providers nationwide, they have the largest network of independent eye care professionals in the country.

To find a provider, visit the VSP Eye Doctor Locator and search by:

  • City or ZIP code

  • Doctor or office name

  • Preferred language or gender

  • Frame brands or premier status

And yes, Reflect Vision Care gladly accepts VSP patients! Even though we are out-of-network, you will have the same exam copay as other providers, and our team will file all claim paperwork for you.

What If My Provider Is Not In-Network?

You can visit any provider you choose. However, if the provider is out-of-network, you may need to pay for your visit up front and then submit a claim to VSP for reimbursement.

The good news? Reflect Vision Care handles this process for you! We’ll file your VSP claim on your behalf so you can still enjoy your full benefits without the hassle.

How Much Does VSP Cost?

VSP offers plans for both individuals and employers, with pricing that varies depending on your coverage level and family size.

Typical plan costs include:

  • Individual plans: around $13 per month for standard coverage

  • Family plans: up to $80 per month for premium options

There are no enrollment fees, and coverage usually starts within five business days after you sign up.

If your VSP plan is through your employer, your cost may be even lower since many employers contribute to premiums.

What Does VSP Cover?

VSP plans are known for their comprehensive coverage and savings on eyewear, exams, and contact lenses.

Eye Exams

Most VSP plans include one comprehensive eye exam per year, typically with a $10–$25 copay.

This exam covers:

  • Visual acuity and prescription testing

  • Eye health evaluation (checking for glaucoma, cataracts, and more)

  • Early detection of systemic conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure

Frames and Lenses

VSP provides an allowance toward frames (often $150–$200) and fully covers single vision, bifocal, and trifocal lenses.

Members also receive discounts on:

  • Anti-glare and UV protection

  • Blue light and digital screen coatings

  • Photochromic and progressive lenses

💡 Fun fact: According to VSP, the average member saves over $200 per year on routine vision expenses!

Contact Lenses

Most VSP plans cover:

  • A contact lens evaluation and fitting (small copay may apply)

  • A contact lens materials allowance—typically $120–$150

Remember, like most vision plans, you’ll need to choose whether to use your benefits toward glasses or contacts during each benefit cycle.

Are Medically Necessary Contact Lenses Covered by VSP?

Yes, some VSP plans provide coverage for medically necessary contact lenses, such as scleral or RGP lenses for conditions like:

  • Keratoconus

  • Severe dry eye

  • Corneal scarring or irregularities

If your plan includes this benefit, both the evaluation and materials may be covered in full. If not, you’ll still receive a discount off our regular contact lens fees.

Does VSP Cover Diabetic Eye Exams?

Some VSP plans include a Diabetic EyeCare Plus Program, which provides additional coverage for patients with diabetes or other systemic health conditions that affect the eyes.

Even if your plan doesn’t include this feature, your medical insurance (such as Medicare, BCBS, or Aetna) will typically cover diabetic eye exams under medical benefits.

Why it matters: Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of blindness in adults aged 40–65, and early detection is key to preventing vision loss.

Does VSP Cover LASIK or PRK?

VSP does not directly cover LASIK or PRK but provides members with exclusive discounts through the VSP Laser VisionCare Program, including:

  • 15% off standard LASIK pricing, or

  • 5% off promotional pricing through participating surgeons

We can help you explore your options and coordinate a consultation with a trusted LASIK partner if you’re considering refractive surgery.
