Did you know your retina, the light-sensitive tissue lining the back of your eye, is the only place in the body where blood vessels can be viewed directly? Pretty amazing, right?

Even better, Optomap is now available at Reflect Vision Care!

What Optomap retinal imaging looks like

What Is Optomap?

Optomap is an advanced digital imaging technology that captures more than 80% of your retina in a single panoramic image. This allows our doctors to evaluate the health of your retina without the need for traditional dilation in many cases.

Developed in 1999, Optomap retinal imaging is now used in nearly 20,000 eye care practices worldwide, and for good reason. It gives optometrists an ultra-widefield view of the retina that standard imaging simply can’t match.

By storing your images year after year, Optomap helps us monitor subtle changes in your eye health over time, supporting early detection and prevention of disease.

Why Retinal Imaging Matters

Your retina plays a vital role in vision and overall health. Because it contains visible blood vessels, eye doctors can often detect early signs of not just eye diseases—but also systemic health conditions like hypertension and diabetes.

With Optomap, we can identify potential issues early, long before you notice symptoms.

Optomap vs. Dilation: What’s the Difference?

A traditional dilated eye exam involves placing drops in your eyes, waiting 20–30 minutes for your pupils to enlarge, and then examining your retina using a bright light and magnifying lens. While effective, dilation can cause light sensitivity and blurry vision for several hours afterward.

Optomap, on the other hand, captures a 200° ultra-wide digital image of your retina in less than half a second, with no discomfort, blurry vision, or downtime.

For most healthy patients, Optomap can take the place of dilation. However, in some cases (like certain retinal conditions or symptoms), your optometrist may recommend both for the most thorough evaluation.

15 Reasons We Love Optomap

1. The most comprehensive eye exam possible

Optomap provides a panoramic view of your retina and advanced tools for zooming in, isolating problem areas, and comparing images year over year.

2. You may be able to skip dilation

For patients with healthy eyes and no risk factors, Optomap often eliminates the need for dilation.

3. Safe, sanitary, and instantaneous

It takes less than a second to capture your image. The device is sanitized between each patient for your comfort and safety.

4. 100% painless and comfortable

No stinging drops. No blurry vision. Just quick, accurate imaging.

5. Great for all ages

From toddlers to seniors, Optomap can be performed safely on patients of any age.

6. Learn more about your own eye health

You’ll be able to see your retina and understand your results as your doctor explains what they mean.

7. No impact on your vision

You can return to work, school, or errands immediately after your appointment, no waiting for your vision to clear.

8. Early detection saves sight

Most retinal diseases develop silently. Optomap helps catch issues like diabetic retinopathy or macular degeneration early, before vision loss occurs.

9. Perfect for monitoring changes over time

Optomap creates a visual record of your retina that we can compare year after year to track any changes.

10. Safe for pregnant patients

Because it doesn’t require dilation drops, Optomap is a safe and effective imaging option during pregnancy.

11. Detects a wide range of eye diseases

From glaucoma to retinal tears, Optomap helps us diagnose and manage conditions early and effectively.

12. Saves you time

Skip the 30-minute dilation process and enjoy a more efficient exam experience.

13. Sees more of your retina

Optomap captures up to 82% of your retina in one image, compared to just 15–60% with traditional imaging.

14. You can keep your image

We can email your Optomap photo to you, or you can take a picture of it on your phone for your own records.

15. Becomes part of your permanent record

Your Optomap images are securely stored so we can compare and track your eye health over time.

Optomap Retinal Imaging FAQs

Can I wear contacts during the Optomap? Yes, although we may ask you to remove them for best image quality.

How often should I have an Optomap? We recommend including Optomap in every annual comprehensive eye exam. If you have diabetes or another condition that affects your eyes, follow your doctor’s recommended schedule.

Does Optomap replace dilation completely? In most healthy eyes, yes, but your doctor may recommend both imaging methods if additional evaluation is needed.

How much does Optomap cost? Only $39!

Does insurance cover it? Most vision plans do not cover Optomap unless it’s medically necessary. However, many patients choose it for the convenience, comfort, and value it adds to their exam.

Is it worth it? Absolutely. Patients love the clarity, comfort, and peace of mind that come with Optomap, and it’s a core part of our advanced digital eye exam experience at Reflect Vision Care.
